I'm Tyler. They call me The Wizard.
The Wizard, since 2008. Disneyland, the Magic Castle, restaurants, stadiums, galas. Somewhere in there I stopped doing tricks at people and started doing the other thing, where a room full of adults forgets for a minute what's supposed to be possible. That's the job now.
Where it started
Eight hours a day on whoever walked through the door.
I worked the Magic Shop at Disneyland for years. Eight hours a day, five days a week, on whoever walked through the door. You find out fast what actually moves a person and what only sounds like it should.
I'm a member of the Magic Castle in Hollywood. I was the house magician at TGIF's and at Spadra's Restaurant, working tables while people ate, which is where I learned most of what I know about a room. Since then it's been corporate events at Allegiant Stadium for LVEP, the Breakthrough T1D Gala at Mandalay Bay, the Forward event at The Gatsby Lounge, and 400K+ people following the work online.
Magic is a job where you walk up to strangers a hundred times a night and they're glad you did. That's been the work since 2008, and you can read a room before you're through the door.
Why "Wizard"
Magician is the job. The Wizard is a return to the tradition.
I don't just do magic. The Wizard does the three parts of what magic should be: magic and illusion, spreading good ideas, and guiding heroes on their hero's journey. That's a return to the tradition.
The trick was never the point. The look on someone's face when the world stops making sense for a second is the point. Magicians at the Castle study every con that's ever been run, every way attention can be steered and a mind can be led. Most of them use it to make a card vanish. I got interested in the part underneath.
I'm a certified hypnotist, and I presented a theory of my own on imagination at Oxford University. It's why the keynotes land the way they do. The audience doesn't watch a demonstration of how their mind works. They're in one.
